The Hospital da Luz Setúbal Ophthalmology Service will offer next October 10, in the context of the World Sight Day celebrations, a free screening on eye disorders. The initiative will take place in the hospital and is open to the general population. Seeing an ophthalmologist regularly is fundamental to monitor and prevent serious eye problems. The symptoms of many disorders – such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and macular degeneration – may not be noticeable for the person in question in an early stage. Taking regular tests allows to detect such diseases early on and treat them more efficiently. The frequency of testing differs with age and associated diseases. But the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology recommends that: Healthy adults should take at least an ophthalmologic exam between 20 and 40, as long as there are no symptoms. After 40, exams should be done every 2 years. Black people should take ophthalmologic tests more frequently for glaucoma (at least every 4 years). Diabetic people or with other diseases that are a risk factor for ocular problems should be examined more frequently (once a year). The World Sight Day: Established by the World Health Organization, it aims to raise the awareness of the population for vision impairment, blindness and the importance of eye health. In that sense, it reminds the need of regular ophthalmologic testing, early detection and treatment of eye disorders, and access to ophthalmologic care for everyone. It also stresses the global effort towards eliminating preventable blindness and improving the quality of life of people with vision loss. Participate in this Hospital da Luz Setúbal screening! Date and time: 10 October 2024, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Place: Hospital da Luz Setúbal, building A (ground 0, waiting hall)
